There is a constant problem of unemployment, and poverty in South Africa. Lots of families in Cape Town earn money by sawing. All women sew. It is one of the jobs they can do independently at home. All the windows and doors on houses are covered with metal bars for protection from burglars, thieves, junkies and other desperate hungry people. One of the interventions that I have done together with the resident families from that notorious part of Cape Town is stitching different kind of useful things on to the bars. I have chosen to use things that can be reused for sewing. By doing it I wanted to symbolically “decorate” bars with things that could easily be stitched of, stolen and used, or soled after, which again symbolically would stop burglars from trying to go further behind bars... |
